Assessing Digital Learning and Instruction

Action Research-Learn by Doing

While embarking on this incredible digital leading and learning journey I realized action research is a concept I experience in my daily personal and career life. Within the 4-phased process (Plan, Act, Develop, Reflect), these last few weeks have been dedicated to planning out an intense plan that articulates the problem I need to solve while fulfilling my role of making this world a better place. Without retention and application of learning, there is no return of a better future for our youth.

After intense thought, I realized my action research needed to focus on knowledge retention in high school learners. More specifically the research question posed, in an "distance learning setting", what impact does ePortfolios have on knowledge retention in 12th grade students with a short attention span?

Spending 5 weeks in the planning stage helped uncover many problems, yet the focus remains on increasing knowledge retention. The next stages of acting and developing will initiate the data collection and analysis of real-time action in an online class setting. Thankfully, my literature review revealed research that substantiated my desire to find solutions to engaging young learners. I will continue to evolve my action plan through reflection and lessons learned to yield successful results from disruptive changes. A target timeline has been produced to drive towards execution while putting learning to practice and intentionally deliver improvements to every student and their future.
